Precision Honing Services
Precision honing services are beneficial in that it improves geometric form and surface texture. While grinding is a high velocity process, a precision honing service does not require as much heat. Therefore, your final product will not be negatively affected by heat stress. This is only one out of the many benefits that comes with investing in precision honing services. It also features an excellent surface integrity finish and precise inner tube tolerances that can be difficult to achieve at higher cutting speeds.
Depending on your substrate, precision honing services involves methods such as gun drilling. Gun drilling generally leaves a burnished finish on the inside of a seamless tube. Depending on what your project is, it may or may not require precision honing services. Here are some examples that will require precision honing.
- Parts too difficult to machine economically
- Undersized parts
- Out of tolerance or out-of-roundness parts
- Parts with tight tolerances
- Parts needing micro-finishes or have a rough surface
- Heat shrunk parts
Precision honing services are always a cost effective method to machine extruded tubing stock to the exact wall thickness and finish. If you are working with expensive metals, precision honing services can cut down your costs significantly. However, if large amounts of metal needs to be removed, other processes may be more effective than precision honing. The Precision Honing Process
To improve surface texture, the precision honing has spring loaded abrasive stones as the cutting tool. The stones’ material can be composed of diamond grains held together by a vitrified or organic bond, aluminum oxide or silicon oxide. By analyzing your substrate on how much work needs to be done, the number of stones and their length and width will vary.
As horizontal and vertical honing processes are both available, we see to it that parts such as Knocker housings & washpipes are honed in vertical spindle machines, up to a maximum stroke of 800 mm.
If your project requires larger and heavier work, vertical spindle machines will be the most beneficial to you. Vertical spindle machines have power stroking speeds that is controlled by our experienced operators. Our vertical spindle machines are engineered with two primary parts. First, the hone body has several styles with many stones of varying sizes and shapes. Between these stones are hardened metal guides to guide it in a straight line. To ensure that your substrate is clean from small chips and stones, our vertical spindles also have a cutting fluid. In addition, the fluid will also lubricate the cutting action.
To get the best out of our precision honing services, if you have a piece of substrate that was altered inaccurately, we can correct the inaccuracies such as chatter marks, out-of-roundness, tapers, deviations, high spots and much more.
